Hyatt Regency Nice Palais de la Méditerranée lives up to its name. Featuring art deco façade, the hotel looks like a museum cum palace from outside. It’s an eye candy from the minute you see it standing majestic along prestigious Promenade des Anglais in the heart of Nice. It’s even more pleasing to the eyes once you step inside – marbled lobby lounge, massive staircase, stained glass windows, precious woods and sparkling crystal chandeliers all silent testimonies to the hotel’s grandeur.
Designed by architects Charles and Marcel Dalmas, its inauguration in 1929 included an impressive line-up of celebrities and politicians from France and overseas. They were all invited guests of American billionaires Franck and Florence Gould, known for their creation of Juan les Pins. Then hailed as a gaming palace, the casino rooms enjoyed some of the most stunning views over the Mediterranean through large picture windows. A 1,000-seat theatre attracted the greatest names in the world of arts and entertainment, including Maurice Chevaliers, Jules Romain, Edith Piaf and Josephine Baker.
Many years later, towards the 1970s the Palace’s glitz and glamor continued to decline until it shut down in April 1978 due to lack of financial resources. Nice’s illustrious past and/or Hyatt Regency Nice Palais de la Méditerranée would have continued in silent decline had it not been for Concorde Hotels & Resorts’ restoration efforts. Much of the old hotel was demolished but the famous Façade remained as its focal point. When Hyatt Regency Nice Palais de la Méditerranée reopened in January 2004, it featured 187 rooms, a luxurious solarium with indoor and outdoor pools and panoramic views, conference and banquet facilities, an auditorium, the restored art deco casino and the latest in fitness and business equipment. Its 21st-century re-opening has once again elevated Hyatt Regency Nice Palais de la Méditerranée to its former glory and legendary status.
Today Hyatt Regency Nice Palais de la Méditerranée remains Nice’s coveted destinations.
